Last summer, we introduced you to Howard Hankins’ collection of presidential busts in Williamsburg, Va.
Arranged neatly in a field behind his family farm outside of Williamsburg, Virginia, Hankins rescued the 20-foot-tall, 15,000 pound busts from the wrecking ball, hauling them from their former home—the now defunct Presidents Park—to their new residence.
Since my first visit, there’s been a flurry of activity and attention surrounding the collection. Meet the Press traveled to interview Hankins about his plans for the collection, and Hankins himself tells me he’s since received a deluge of inquiries about the statues. He’s also planning on starting a Kickstarter to get the sculptures restored and properly displayed.
Until then, though, the presidents continue to reside in a marshy swath of land in his backyard. On Sunday, I grabbed a couple of cameras, some film, and dug out my car, venturing south to see how they survived the blizzard. It was a surreal scene: each of the busts sat encased in ice, covered with a layer of snow. Local kids took turns sledding down the huge mulch piles that surround the collection, more interested in winter thrills than the beautiful, bizarre scenery around them.
In any case, here are my photos. Enjoy!
