Antonin Scalia, the famously conservative Supreme Court Justice, was found dead Saturday morning at a West Texas resort, according the San Antonio Express News. Scalia was 79 years old.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed Scalia’s passing in a statement released Saturday afternoon.
Scalia was staying as a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, an upscale resort located in Presidio County, Texas, close to the Rio Grande River in the rural Southwestern part of the state. The Associate Justice arrived at the ranch on Friday and attended a private function in the evening with about 40 people.
When Scalia did not appear for breakfast this morning, a ranch employee went the Justice’s room to find him. There, the employee found Scalia’s body.
The FBI, Presidio County Sheriff, and U.S. Marshal Service are all involved in the investigation. However, all sources indicate the Justice died of natural causes.
Scalia was among the most controversial Supreme Court Justices. His legal philosophy, termed “originalism,” was rooted in interpreting the Constitution through the lens the document’s “original meaning,” as it was when originally ratified in 1788. This translated to a history of rigidly conservative rulings by the Justice.
Chief Justice John Roberts offered words of condolences to the friends and family of the justice on Saturday afternoon:
On behalf of the Court and retired Justices, I am saddened to report that our colleague Justice Antonin Scalia has passed away. He was an extraordinary individual and jurist, admired and treasured by his colleagues. His passing is a great loss to the Court and the country he so loyally served. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Maureen and his family.
