Prince George’s County Police have now identified 17 kids who were sexually victimized by a volunteer and former employee of Judge Sylvania W. Woods Elementary School in Glenarden, Md.

Deonte Carraway, 22, of Glenarden was charged with 10 counts of felony child pornography earlier this month. He admitted to creating videos of children performing sexual acts, according to charging documents. In approximately 40 videos—many of which were filmed on school grounds in the middle of the day—he can sometimes be seen or heard directing the children, according to police. The students are between the ages of 9 and 13.

In addition to the elementary school, police say students were victimized in private homes, at the Zion Praise Tabernacle Lutheran Church in Bowie, the Glenarden Municipal Center, and the Theresa Banks Memorial Aquatic Center.

The investigation that includes county police and the FBI, is ongoing.

In response to the arrest, Prince George’s County Public School leaders have met with the school community to share information on the incident and review policies and procedures to report this type of activity. In addition, students and families who request counseling and psychological support will receive those resources for as long as needed.

“As a father, grandfather, and educator that has dedicated my life to the education and safety of students across the state of Maryland, my heart goes out to the families and victims at Judge Sylvania Woods Elementary School and the entire Glenarden community,” said Dr. Kevin M. Maxwell, PGCPS Chief Executive Officer, during a press conference last week. “I, like many, was shocked, appalled, disgusted, and disheartened by the allegations that a former PGCPS employee harmed students and vulnerable children.”

Dr. Maxwell has set in place a taskforce to review current policies and procedures and identify areas of immediate improvement, among other initiatives.
