You can walk comfortably outside without a jacket, which means spring and street sweepers can’t be far behind.
In fact, the vehicles will be back on the roads tomorrow, as regular street sweeping returns to the District. Ticketing season lasts from March 1 to October 31, and being caught parked on the street during restricted hours runs drivers a $45 fine. But motorists have a four-day grace period before the real pink slips come out next Monday.
According to the Department of Public Works, it’s the first time that the forecast has allowed the agency to actually start street sweeping on schedule in a few years. Because the vehicles spray a fine mist of water, DPW doesn’t operate them when temperatures are below freezing or if there is already snow or ice on the ground. Last year, it was pushed back by two weeks. Although there’s a chance of snow on Friday, the rest of the forecast ranges from the high 40s to the high 60s.
We can feel the clouds of citywide Seasonal Affective Disorder already beginning to lift.
