Since pecking out of their shells, the eaglets born at the National Arboretum have been referred to as “D2” and “D3.” But not for long.
The American Eagle Foundation has announced a “Name the Nestlings” social media campaign to give the birds “creative and symbolic names that live up to the names of their parents, ‘Mr. President’ and ‘The First Lady.'”
Viewers of the DC Eagle Cam can participate via Twitter and Instagram by following the American Eagle Foundation, then posting suggested names along with the hashtags #dceaglecam and #namethenestlings. Folks can also visit the American Eagle Foundation Facebook page or the DC Department of Energy and Environment Facebook page and share suggestions with the aforementioned hashtags.
The sex of the eaglets have yet to be determined, so people should come up with gender-neutral “or names that can be cleverly altered to fit either a male or a female,” the foundation said in a release.
The two final names will be announced at the National Arboretum on April 26. Here’s what people have been submitting so far.
