Looks like Washington Wizards are going for a change-up. The team announced today that it will not renew the contract for head coach Randy Wittman, after beating the Atlanta Hawks yesterday 109-98 in the final game of the season.
“There were high internal and external expectations for this team coming into this season based on the momentum we had generated over the previous two years,” Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld said in a release. “Unfortunately, the inconsistency of the team’s performance and effort, particularly on our home court, did not allow us to meet those expectations and we decided a coaching change was needed.”
Wittman has been head coach for the past four years, taking the team to the second round of the playoffs in 2014 and 2015. This year, the Wizards missed out on the postseason tournament, finishing 41-41 and 10th in the Eastern Conference.
According to the Associated Press, Wittman was asked about his job status after last night’s game. In response, he said he loves his job and “I’m going to come to work until they tell me I can’t.”
Well, about an hour later, that’s precisely what happened, AP reported.
