An earlier version of this post said that last year’s deadly smoke incident at L’Enfant Plaza Metro was due to an arcing insulator, however, that is incorrect. That incident involved an issue with power cables.

The Arlington County Fire Department was on the scene of a Metrorail fire this morning that caused delays on the Orange and Blue Lines. The fire on the tracks at Rosslyn Metro was caused by an arcing insulator, according to Metro spokesperson Sherri Ly.

This type of fire happens when the protective covering along a third rail gives off sparks or smoke.

Metro shut down the rail system in March to inspect cables after another fire sparked safety concerns. Teams inspected 600 underground jumper cables, and Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld announced more than two dozen damaged areas.

Passengers on the Orange and Blue lines experienced delays this morning due to single-tracking for about an hour, according to NBC4. Metro reported residual delays thereafter, but the lines are now running back to normal, Ly says.
