Evan Weiss’s emo project, Into It. Over It., plays Black Cat on Saturday.
Tuesday
Operators and Bogan Via @ DC9 $12 8:30 P.M. All ages, inaccessible venue.
Dan Boeckner has been pretty busy lately. Best known for being the foil to Spencer Krug in the beloved group Wolf Parade, Boeckner also put out records with Handsome Furs and appeared in the super group Divine Fits. While Handsome Furs is now inactive, Wolf Parade are back and are playing major festivals this summer. However, before Boeckner can get back together with his Wolf Parade members, he is debuting his new band, Operators, which released its debut LP, A Cold Wave, on April 1st. Like Handsome Furs, Operators are electronic based, but gone are the dark-wave synths, which are replaced with sunnier songs that are as catchy as anything Boeckner released with Wolf Parade. If you are a fan of Wolf Parade or Handsome Furs, this is a show you should check out.

Wednesday
White Denim, Sam Cohen @ Black Cat $18 7:30. All ages, accessible venue.
Austin, TX’s White Denim has accomplished a lot since releasing its first record in 2008. Now seven albums in, the band just released Stiff in March. Since adding a fourth member and graduating to proper studios, White Denim has expanded its psychedelic southern rock style. While the band’s songs start out in a traditional fashion, tempos quickly change and tracks go off down jammy paths. Stiff marks the first album since the group’s original guitarist and drummer departed, leaving front man James Petralli to pick up the pieces. Stiff’s tracks are some of the band’s most accessible and poppy with flashes of soul and funk seeping through the southern rock swagger.
>>9:30 Club: Good Charlotte, Waterparks $30 7 P.M. All ages, accessible venue.
Thursday
TV Girl, Furniteur, Infinity Crush @ Comet Ping Pong $12 9 P.M. All ages, accessible venue.
TV Girl makes sample heavy music that at some moments recalls The Avalanches or Beck in his 90’s Dust Brothers period. The band’s early singles made waves on blogs, but TV Girl has never really gotten its due. The band’s latest record, Who Really Cares?, is full of sunny sounding songs, but each tune details a serious break up, leaving singer Brad Petering full of bile and spit. Not very many bands make music like TV Girl so it is exciting to hear someone trying to mine that particular sound.
>>9:30 Club: Tokyo Police Club, From Indian Lakes $25 6 P.M. All ages, accessible venue.
Friday
>>Rock and Roll Hotel: Wylder, Justin Trawick, Annie Stokes $12 8 P.M. All ages, accessible venue.
>>Black Cat: Eugene Mirman, Robyn Hitchcock $22 9 P.M. All ages, accessible venue.
Saturday
Into It. Over It., The World is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, The Sidekicks, Pinegrove @ Black Cat $15 7 P.M. All ages, accessible venue.
Just to get one thing straight, Emo never died, but just went into hibernation for some years. While the 2002-2004 wave of emo bands are now on reunion tours, newer groups are picking up the torch. One of the bands leading the charge is Evan Weiss’s project, Into It. Over It. Weiss has previously played in the band Their/They’re/There which features emo lifer Mike Kinsella, but Into It. Over It. is where he shines. The band just released its third and best record, Standards, which encapsulates second-wave emo at its best. As far as the other three bands on the bill, all three are taking emo to new heights, especially The World is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die. If you want a primer for the booming scene, this show should be on your list.
