Almost exactly a decade since West Wing aired its last episode, actress Allison Janney showed up at a real-life White House press briefing as press secretary C.J. Cregg.
Initially the room groaned when she walked in, but she got a couple laughs at the line that White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest was out with a root canal, a callback to an old episode. It sounds like the press corps hasn’t chucked their old DVDs! She added, “But let’s be honest, I’m better at this than he is anyway.”
She announced that Obama was working on his jokes for the upcoming Nerd Prom, and that she would be performing The Jackal. That got a laugh, too. Here’s a refresher of that odd moment:
Janney wasn’t just reliving her days as Cregg walking and talking down halls of power. She used her few minutes at the podium to bring attention to country’s opioid epidemic. This is related to her current role as a recovering addict on the TV show Mom. (She even waved to the show’s creator Chuck Lorre, who was sitting in on the briefing.)
Janney saluted the White House Champions of Change, who are recognized for their work on substance abuse issues. She told reporters, “This is a disease that can touch anybody and all of us can help reduce drug abuse through evidence-based treatment, prevention, and recovery. Research shows it works — and courageous Americans show it works everyday.”
Janney did take one question in character. When asked who the West Wing‘s President Bartlett would endorse, she answered, “I think you know the answer to that question.”
