The Funk Parade will blast its way back to U Street this Saturday, bringing with it more than 40 musical acts like Rare Essence and Sam Prather’s Groove Orchestra.

To ensure everyone can get down during the parade, there’ll be some street closures on the route. The parade begins at 4 p.m. on May 7 on the 600 block of T Street NW, between Florida Ave. and 7th Street NW. (People will begin assembling around 3:45 p.m.) And for the second year in a row, they’re shutting down part of U Street. The 2015 Funk Parade marked the first time in 17 years that the city allowed its closure.

From approximately 4 to 5 p.m., the parade will go:

  • West on T Street NW to Vermont Avenue NW
  • Northeast on Vermont Avenue NW to U Street NW
  • West on U Street NW to the 1200 block of U Street NW (this is where the parade will disband

D.C. Police and Department of Transportation also want motorists to know that the whole area will have increased pedestrians because of the parade, so pay special attention.

While you get ready for Saturday, listen to D.C. producer and artist Kokayi’s funk parade anthems, made using sounds of the city submitted by residents. He told Bandwidth he got more recordings than expected, so he turned The Sounds of the City into a four-part soundscape. He’s one of performers as well.

Also expected to attend? The 51-foot joint used in the White House smoke-in.
