A one-time cellphone store is reopening on Mt. Pleasant Street as a one-screen arthouse movie theater on Sunday.

Cinephiles have been looking forward to the opening since last March, when Mt. Pleasant residents David Cabrera and Ryan Hunter launched a Kickstarter to get their passion project up and running (285 people contributed $16,149 to make it a reality). A mock calendar they published with the campaign had offerings that careened from R. Kelly’s Trapped In the Closet saga to Black Orpheus to Saturday morning cartoons.

But their first official screening is Moonwalk One, a 1970 documentary about Apollo 11 that was largely forgotten until a group of filmmakers helped resurrect it in 2009.

Turns out the indie movie theater scene is alright, after all.

Suns Cinema (3107 Mt Pleasant St NW) will open at 5 p.m. on Sunday, and the first screening will be at 6:30 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door.
