Over the next few weeks, DDOT is reprogramming nearly 15,000 parking meters so they all cost $2.30 an hour.

Currently, “premium demand” and commercial zones run drivers $2.00 and “normal demand” zones cost $.75. The D.C. Council ordered the new rate last fall in place of a previously announced initiative to extend enforcement hours to 10 p.m. in several busy neighborhoods. DDOT is “no longer pursuing extended hours,” according to spokesman Terry Owens.

In other parking news, DDOT is circulating a survey for the annual Visitor Parking Pass program (you might remember the controversy and subsequent overhaul of the process). They appear to be considering an electronic system and payment for the passes, which residents can give to guests for hassle free parking.
