Dish of the week: Highlights of Northern Virginia
Where to get it: Taste of Arlington
Sun is in the forecast for Sunday, so head out on the Orange Line to Ballston (though note the 20-minute headways) for the Taste of Arlington festival. The event will be held from noon to 6 p.m. along Wilson Boulevard near Ballston Metro station, with more than 50 bars and restaurants expected to turn out. There will be free live music and entertainment throughout as well, including a set by 90s cover band White Ford Bronco (1:50 p.m. to 3:20 p.m.)
Participating bars and restaurants serving bites and sips include neighborhood favorites like SER, Texas Jack’s, Heavy Seas Alehouse, Yona, Bracket Room, and Kapnos. There will also be a family-friendly beer and wine garden hosted by Oregon’s Deschutes Brewery; that space will stay open until 7 p.m.
Admission is free, but tickets must be purchased a la carte for food and drink tastings as well as kids’ games. A book of 10 food and drink tickets can be purchased for $35 until May 14th (it’ll be $40 on the day of the event). Tickets are also on sale for the special dog park and children’s play zone. The event is rain or shine, so this recent spat of gloomy weather won’t spoil the afternoon.
Small bites:
Free French wine tasting
Mosey over to Weygandt Wines (3519 Connecticut Avenue NW) in Cleveland Park this Saturday for a complimentary French wine tasting from noon to 4 p.m. The shop will welcome French winemaker Clément Berthier and highlight wines from the Sancerre and Coteaux du Giennois regions of the Loire Valley. The featured bottles will be reasonably priced from $13.50 to $30, so don’t be afraid of finding one you like to take home.
7 Locks tap takeover
Rockville’s 7 Locks Brewing (12227 Wilkins Ave), which opened this past November, is getting some D.C. exposure this month. The brewery is taking over six tap lines at Macon Bistro & Larder (5520 Connecticut Avenue NW) through May 31. Each draft will be $7 a pint or $15 a flight. Several beers will be available for your consideration, including Sligo Creek Lager, Snakeden Saison, and a house IPA.
Embassy Open House
This Saturday, Cultural Tourism DC’s Passport DC 2016 program is hosting a European Union Embassy open house. Visitors can experience the food, dance, and music of 28 nations, including Malta, Slovakia, Ireland, and Luxembourg. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free and government-issue ID is recommended.
A new Sunday dinner special
The Riggsby (1731 New Hampshire Avenue NW) is rolling out a new Sunday prime rib special, which fits perfectly with its supper club vibe. For $49, guests get a three-course meal that includes a 16 ounce prime rib with vegetables and mashed potatoes along with choice of soup or salad and a fruit pie or cobbler dessert. If only it was a Game of Thrones-themed special.
