Update: Maggie has been reunited with her owners.

We’ve reached out to the Steels, and will update further if we hear back.

A young Boston Terrier puppy was stolen from her owner’s car in broad daylight yesterday afternoon, and her owners are worried that she will get sick without her medication.

Magnolia Steel, who her owners call Maggie, is about four months old.

“We were out running errands and so we parked at 9th and K,” says her owner, Michael Steel, a political operative in D.C. He says he gave her some water and a short walk, and then put her in the car while he grabbed a bite to eat. When he returned, “the passenger’s side window had been smashed and her pet carrier was gone.”

Steel called D.C. Police immediately, and says two officers arrived on bikes. D.C. Police spokesperson Karimah Bilal confirms an alleged theft of a dog and destruction of property reported at that location at around 1 p.m., and that the incident is under investigation.

Steel and his wife, Mary Kathryn, are particularly concerned because Maggie is not in good health and suffers from giardia. “She came from a puppy mill and has a series of stomach problems. Without her medication, she is going to get sick.”

Steel says they spent the night canvassing the neighborhood and putting up signs, offering a reward for Maggie’s safe return. They’re also in the process of talking to the Humane Society and Animal Control.

“There’s been an extraordinary outpouring of support,” he says. “She’s a sweet, adorable dog and all of our neighbors love her. There’s a fear every dog owner has of someone snatching up their dog. Wherever she is, she’s probably very scared and very cold. If you see her, please pick her up and email us at the email address or call the police.”
