Thought the days of donning your best robes and heading out for a Harry Potter midnight release party were behind you? Enter Harry Potter and the Cursed Child—or at least the first version of it.
Billed as “the eighth story, nineteen years later,” we’ll soon meet overworked, middle-aged Harry and his eldest child in a two-part play. It starts previews at the Palace Theatre London next month, with an official premiere date of July 30. Fans can get their hands on a “Special Rehearsal Edition”of the script starting on July 31 (at some point, a “Definitive Collector’s Edition” will be released that incorporates changes made to the play as it runs).
Here’s the premise:
It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.
While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.
And so, nineteen years after the first Harry Potter book came out, we’re back to familiar release party rituals. Politics & Prose promises the following on the evening of July 30:
Kick off the festivities by taking our special bookstore-themed Flourish & Blotts quiz to get sorted into a house or confirm your allegiance. The Den will transform into the Three Broomsticks and offer magical food and drink options, which will fuel your creativity at our wand-making station (no dueling, please!). Stand out from the Muggles by participating in our costume contest, and be sure to brush up on your knowledge of the Wizarding world before the big night.
East City Bookshop, a newcomer to the indie book scene, is also planning a midnight release party. The Capitol Hill shop will have trivia, a costume contest, and a movie screening, along with drinks from the neighboring Beuchert’s Saloon.
And Kramerbooks highly encourages costumes at their release party. The first 150 people to preorder and pick it up on the evening of the 30th will get a “hand-printed, glow-in-the-the-dark Marauder’s Map.”
