The next time you’re looking for a $14 craft cocktail and tapas topped with tweezered microgreens, don’t even both stopping at the former Atlas Room, owner and chef Matt Cordes says in a release. His newly-reimagined bar, The Haymaker (1015 H Street NE), now in the midst of renovations, is going to be an anti-hipster paradise chock full of draft beer, wings, and flat screen televisions tuned to sports and news.

“Even with the great reviews The Atlas Room received and our wonderful regulars, it was time for a change,” says Cordes. “We love the neighborhood, and we want to offer them a relaxing happy hour to unwind after work.” He shut down the Atlas Room, once celebrated for its inventive upscale multiethnic cuisine, a month ago, and is now at work on retooling the place. The Haymaker will take its place sometime this month if things go according to plan.

Night owls will find a laid-back place to hang out, with plenty of “non-craft” cocktails — think cosmos and Dark ‘n’ Stormys — along with a handful of punches and what Cordes terms “approachable bar food”. While the plan is to start off with an absence of upscale goodies—he’s clear that there will be no Mason jars stuffed full of housemade pickles—Cordes has also placed the weight of the future menu firmly on the shoulders of the patrons, saying “If the crowd starts asking for something more upscale, I might acquiesce. Bottom line, regulars from the neighborhood will dictate the menu once we get settled in.“

We’re voting for the return of Ladies Night and 2-for-1 Screwdrivers.
