Another one of the District’s best speciality shops bites the dust. Books For America, a non-profit that’s shelved cheap books in Dupont Circle since 2005 will shutter at the end of June, according to a Facebook post from the store’s founder, Steve Hersey.

After suffering financially for years, Hersey says it’s time to regroup. Unlike other longtime establishments that have announced closings, Hersey says that his landlord has been “very patient and very kind” as they struggled to keep afloat.

The already deeply-discounted books, which come by way of donations, are now 25 percent off. Plus, CDs and DVDs are $1-$2. All proceeds from book sales fund the nonprofit, which has granted more that 1 million books to local schools, shelters and many other organizations, Hersey says.

Although the store is closing, the organization is still accepting donations of books and other items. And while he hopes to open another store in the city soon, “we do not yet have a timeline for that,” Hersey continues.
