The Metropolitan Police Department has arrested a 17-year-old male after finding an assault rifle his home in Northeast. According to police documents, the teenager threatened to shoot his ex-girlfriend and peers at her high school, as well as the girl’s mother and her colleagues at work, The Washington Post reports.
His ex-girlfriend is a student at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt. Md. Her mother alerted Maryland police of threats that her daughter received through text messages, and authorities have been searching for the suspect since June 14, according to court records, The Post reports.
D.C. Police Chief Lanier spoke about the case at a press conference advocating for gun reform yesterday, saying that MPD worked with the young woman, got an emergency search warrant, and recovered an AK-47 as well over 180 rounds of ammunition” from the teen’s apartment in Kenilworth. “These weapons are dangerous enough. But those weapons in the hands of the wrong person, the impact is incredible,” Lanier said.
The teen could possibly be charged with several weapons violations and making threats of mass violence, according to court documents, The Post reports.
