During the Supreme Court’s final decision day yesterday, the justices unanimously vacated former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell’s corruption conviction.
But if you picked up The Free Lance-Star, you might have been a little misled.

That’s right, the Fredericksburg, Va. newspaper used the name of current Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe instead. It is a little confusing—after all, McAuliffe is also under investigation for donations to his gubernatorial campaign.
But the editor of The Free Lance-Star says that the headline was indeed an error, not an instance of clairvoyance. In an apology, editor Phil Jenkins calls it a “massive and embarrassing error” due to a new software system and design changes.
“We are in the process of hiring additional editors who will help us do a better job of avoiding and catching mistakes,” Jenkins writes. “In the meantime, we’re instituting a new process for proofing our pages to ensure that our readers receive the quality product they deserve.”
We’ve reached out to Governor McAuliffe’s office for comment and will update this if we hear back.
