Reminds us of: The Carrie Diaries meets Girls

Flop, Fine or Fringe-tastic?: Fine.

Do you remember your childhood dream of moving to the city on your own? The one where you’d land a big-time job and bring in an even bigger paycheck to afford your fancy high-rise loft? In Complexity: A One Woman Show, Kylie Westerbeck puts us in a much less glossy real-life version of this dream, in the form of a musical.

The show centers around a quirky, helpless, twenty-something lead character, Beth. Westerbeck’s lead performance is a mixed bag: sometimes inspiring and other times strangling.

The coming-of-age story, probably best suited for a college-aged audience, examines how people cling to companionship in times of newness and uncertainty. It further explores what happens when reliance on other people inevitably goes south. While the storyline could have gone deeper, the performance leaves its audience with an adequate tale of circumstances that arise in the life of a young person who’s searching for validation. There are universal themes here that are much appreciated. What’s more, the catchy songs, live drumming and slightly choreographed dancing adds an upbeat tempo to the entire show.

Complexity: A One Woman Show is playing on July 10 at 12:55 p.m., July 14 at 6:15 p.m., July 16 at 9 p.m., and July 22 at 8 p.m.
