After dropping to the lowest level in seven years in 2014, speed camera citations nearly doubled to 520,104 in fiscal year 2015. And if the first quarter of fiscal year 2016 is any indication, the District is well on its way to outpace last year’s total, according to data obtained by AAA.
Between October and February, the District issued 365,122 tickets—more than in the entire year for 2014—for a total revenue of $37 million. It is unclear if how much the drop in 2014 was the result of wintry weather, poor maintenance, or drivers simply speeding less.
“The speed camera program is back with a vengeance,” AAA spokesman John B. Townsend II said in a release.
While it is easier to fight other types of tickets, according to AAA’s analysis of 2013 data, twenty percent of tickets from red light or speeding cameras were still dropped as a result of challenges.
