D.C.’s arena football team is no longer nameless. Four months after Mayor Muriel Bowser and Ted Leonsis told District residents that they’ll have a new team to cheer on, Leonsis announced this morning that it will be called the Washington Valor. They now have a logo, too.
And the name has “Valor”! Well received by fans and our community! Thank you! https://t.co/XDIwpXviSO

The AFL is going into its 29th season this year with eight teams. The District’s will be the fourth team on the East Coast. It will also be the city’s first indoor football team since the D.C. Armor played in the American Indoor Football Association in 2009.
Leonsis, owner of the Washington Wizards, Mystics, and Capitals, described the sport in March as fast-paced, family-friendly, and communal. “We wanted to embrace it and bring it far and wide to our fan base and community,” he said.
The team will play at the Verizon Center. “Our goal is to get to the playoffs and win championships to bring the downtown area alive,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser, adding that Penn Quarter restaurants are packed after hockey games. “The spirit and the morale of the city goes up when you have winning teams,” she continued.
In May, the team announced Dean Cokinos, who was most recently the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Storm, as head coach.
“We’re extremely excited to bring Dean on board as our first head coach. He has won an AFL championship, and we are looking forward to working with him to build a championship-caliber team and a supportive fan base in Washington,” said Roger Mody of Monumental Sports & Entertainment at the time.
“Our team motto, our battle cry, is 21 for 60. 21 men fighting for 60 minutes.” – Coach Cokinos #ValorNation

Season tickets for the 2017 season will go on sale later this year, but future fans can make a $25 per seat deposit to get access to available seats before the general public, according to the team’s site. For those who can’t wait, you could always join Team Valor in Pokemon Go.
