A D.C. man pleaded guilty today to pretending to be the chief of staff to a congressman and civil rights activist. 35-year-old Jarrett Lewis claimed to be working for Congressman John Lewis (no relation) from September 2014 through May 2015, according to his plea deal, and he did it for the perks.
While impersonating the congressman’s right hand man, Lewis requested entry and VIP treatment at a high-end restaurant in South Beach and asked for field passes to attend a Washington Football Team game, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C.
Congressman Lewis’ actual chief of staff found out about his imposter, which prompted a federal investigation. The charge of false personation of an employee or officer of the United States carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison and potential fees, but under federal sentencing guidelines, Lewis could face up to six months in prison and a fine.
Judge Rudolph Contreras has scheduled Lewis’ sentencing date for October 13.
