The D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation is cancelling an “extravaganza featuring fun activities, entertainment, and food for the whole family” scheduled for this Saturday due to the heat.

The second annual Rec Day was slated for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Randall Recreation Center’s Zimmerman Field, but a release states that the cancellation is happening “out of concern that participants and staff may experience prolonged heat exposure” during the heat emergency.

According to DPR spokesperson Gwendolyn Crump, the event is canceled rather than postponed. “I have not heard of a new date,” she says.

Instead, DPR is extending hours at some of its spray parks and pools (see below), though the agency says that finding a cool, indoor spot to post up is better. We add that frozen foods may also help.

Rec Day isn’t the first activity to fall victim to the heat. A heat advisory warning felled last Thursday’s Music on the Mall performance (tomorrow’s Music on the Mall is expected to happen as planned), and lead to an early wrap-up for an evangelical concert aimed at millennials on the National Mall on Saturday. The Washington Post reports that “emergency medical technicians were overwhelmed by a large number of people who passed out in the heat.” The caliber of our small talk has also suffered.
