Dischord Records took the city and the music world by storm 36 years ago. In 1980, the label’s first release was Minor Disturbance, an EP by the Teen Idles that featured somebody named Ian MacKaye on bass.
Now, Minor Disturbance, as well as the entire Dischord catalog, is available to stream on Bandcamp.
Inflation has been kind to the catalog; in 1980, you could buy this EP for $1.99 at your better local record store (don’t ask what original pressings go for). The digital download costs $4.
With many artists struggling to make money from streaming services like Spotify, Bandcamp is a natural fit for the local label. Dischord has long prided itself on being fair to consumers and musicians, and Bandcamp stands above other digital services in its dedication to the artists—the site boasts that in the last 30 days alone, it has paid $4.2 million to its artists.
While the early Dischord compilation Flex Your Head has been broken up into streams for the individual artists on the album, you can now stream vintage hardcore like the No Policy EP by State of Alert, led by then-Haagen Dazs employee Henry Garfield; all the Fugazi your heart desires; and plenty more.
