Scared and suffering from serious burns, Lucy fled from the Logan Circle apartment building that caught fire yesterday afternoon. The 11-year-old rat terrier dodged in and out of traffic for several blocks, but a dogged police officer stayed on her tail and was able to eventually get Lucy to a vet.

For his efforts, Douglas Berlin has been presented with a “humane hero award” from the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League.

“Officer Berlin’s dedication to the care and safety of this dog is a shining example of what we strive to do every day-make a difference in the lives of the animals and the people we serve,” WHS-WARL President Lisa LaFontaine said in a release. “Officer Berlin put himself in harm’s way for to save Lucy’s life and that exemplifies what this award is all about. He is a hero to Lucy and her family, to our organization and to the people of the District of Columbia.”

On his efforts to chase the dog down, Berlin said “Lucy is 11 but she runs like she is two.”

Plumes of dark smoke were visible for several miles as more than 100 firefighters worked to contain the blaze at 12th and N Streets NW. Investigators are still trying to figure out the cause of the fire, but it appears to have started on the roof. Three firefighters were taken to the hospital and 12 people were displaced from the building.

On the bright side, it looks like Lucy is going to be all right. She’s back with her owner and recovering from her injuries.
