If there ever was a good time to launch a new ridehailing service, it would be hard to do better than in the middle of a major Metro maintenance effort. And so, welcome Via to the suite of transportation apps crowding your phone.

The service, which began in New York City in 2013 (and dubiously claims to be “New York City’s favorite shared ride service”), offers shared rides—much like Lyft Line, Uber Pool, and the local version Split.

As Via gets underway, the initial launch zone only covers a chunk of D.C., tracking the Red Line from Cleveland Park to the NoMa-Gallaudet stations—nevermind that the sixth surge actually involves single tracking between Takoma and Silver Spring. It is also only available from 6 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 8 p.m.

But if you’re looking for a cheap ride in those areas, during those times, Via is promising a flat fare of $2.15 for the time being (in NYC, rides are $5 and in Chicago they cost $3.95).
