A Federal Aviation Administration employee was indicted this week after being charged with a sex crime and assault of a police officer. Officials allege that Scott Casoni attempted to arrange a sexual encounter with a 10-year-old girl, but was in fact communicating with an undercover FBI agent. And in a scuffle when he was arrested last month, Casoni broke a detective’s wrist, according to NBC 4, which first reported the charges.
The 46-year-old has been employed with the FAA for eight years, and he’s also a “disabled veteran, having served twenty years in the Army,” NBC 4 reports. He worked at the agency’s headquarters in D.C. and lives in Alexandria.
In May, an FBI agent posted an advertisement on a website that’s “frequented by individuals who have a sexual interest in children and incest,” according to a court document provided to DCist by the U.S. District Court for D.C. In June, Casoni answered the ad over email, saying in part, “I would love to meet and have some fun with a sweet young thing.” Over the course of the month, Casoni continued to message with the undercover agent, who he believed to be the father of a 10-year-old girl.
And on June 30, Casoni arranged to meet the man and girl in D.C. When he met the agent, Casoni became paranoid, asking if he was law enforcement, according the a police account. After the agent tried to place him under arrest, Casoni “bolted” away. Authorities had to perform “a tactical takedown” of Casoni, who eventually surrendered. Police found a cell phone and condom in his wallet.
During questioning, Casoni told police that he did not plan to engage sexually with the girl, and instead “he would have maybe taken the child to get ice-cream,” according to the document.
Casoni is currently suspended from his job, NBC reports. He was indicted on one count of Travel with Intent to Engage in Illicit Sexual Conduct on Tuesday, William Miller of the U.S. District Court told DCist. And his next court appearance hasn’t been scheduled.
