Douglas Brooks, who went by the stage name “Swipey,” was fatally shot early yesterday morning in Suitland, Md. Raised in the District, the 18-year-old rapper was making a name for himself in the music industry, having performed alongside artists such as Wale.

On Sunday around 1:05 a.m., police were called to the 3600 block of Parkway Terrace Drive for a shooting, according to a release from the Prince George’s County Police Department. Officers found Brooks outside suffering from a gunshot wound—he was pronounced dead on the scene.

“He was a good guy, he was a nice guy, he never tried to start no trouble,” Brooks’s mother, Freda, told The Washington Post. “I’m crying. I’m crying because I love my son.” Wale, who represents D.C. on a national scale, tweeted his condolences saying, in part, “God Bless DMV.”

Kevin Baldwin signed Brooks to his record label, M.O.P3, a year ago. Baldwin told The Post about an argument that happened after a party on Saturday night. Later, a drive-by shooting took place that ended Brooks’ life, Baldwin said on behalf of Brook’s family members.

At this point in the police investigation, detectives believe that Brooks was not shot at random, but they are still working to identify a suspect. Police are offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.
