Ted Leonis announced back in March that the District would be getting an Arena Football League team. It has a name, it has a coach, now it just needs needs, uh, players.
To that end, the Washington Valor announced today that it will host an open tryout on October 8, ahead of their first season in 2017. Online registration costs $75 (or $100 at the door) and the location and time have not yet been announced.
“We’re in a talent-rich region and hope to find some quality players who can contribute to our organization,” said head coach Dean Cokinos in a statement. “We are seeking talented, tough, hardworking players from the area and beyond and this will be the first chance for potential candidates to showcase their abilities.”
The AFL is finishing up its 29th season this year with eight teams. The District’s will be the fourth team on the East Coast, and it will also be the city’s first indoor football team since the D.C. Armor played in the American Indoor Football Association in 2009. Here’s a handy primer on the rules of arena football for new fans.
