Metrorail riders should brace themselves for disruptions on four of six lines this weekend, including a station closure.
For the third and final weekend shutdown, Franconia Springfield station will be closed as part of Safetrack’s eighth surge. Riders can take free shuttle buses between Franconia Springfield and Van Dorn Street.
In addition, Blue Line trains will operate every 24 minutes between Van Dorn Street and Largo Town Center, Yellow Line trains will run every 24 minutes between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Square, and Silver Line trains will operate every 15 minutes between Wiehle-Reston East and Ballston only.
Elsewhere in the system, the Red Line will operate every 6 to 20 minutes, and Orange and Green Line trains will operate as normal.
Red Line
Trains every 6-20 minutes | 7:00 a.m. Saturday until Closing Sunday
Single tracking between Silver Spring & Glenmont to allow for communication cable installation.
Red Line trains will operate:
- Between Shady Grove & Silver Spring: every 12-15 minutes with additional trains between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.
- Shuttle trains will operate between Silver Spring & Glenmont every 20 minutes. Transfer at Silver Spring to continue trip.
Orange Line

Silver Line
Trains every 15 minutes between Wiehle-Reston East & Ballston only | 7:00 a.m. Saturday until closing Sunday
Silver Line trains will operate every 15 minutes between Wiehle-Reston East and Ballston only. Customers traveling to/from other stations should use Orange and/or Blue line trains to complete their trip. At Ballston, transfer between Silver and Orange line trains on the same platform.
Blue Line
Buses replace trains at Franconia-Springfield station only | 7:00 a.m. Saturday until closing Sunday
Throughout the weekend, Blue Line service will operate every 24 minutes between Van Dorn Street & Largo Town Center stations. On Saturday and Sunday, there will be no train service at Franconia-Springfield to allow for switch maintenance. Free shuttle buses will operate between Franconia-Springfield and Van Dorn Street.
Single tracking between Addison Road and Largo Town Center to allow for platform rehabilitation and between Braddock Road and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to allow for switch replacement.
Yellow Line
Trains every 24 minutes Huntington to Mt. Vernon Sq only | 7:00 a.m. Saturday through closing Sunday
Single tracking between Braddock Road and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to allow for switch replacement.
All trains will operate to/from Mt. Vernon Square rather than Fort Totten. Customers traveling to/from stations north of Mt. Vernon Sq should use a Green Line train to complete their trip.
Green Line
Regular weekend service
Single tracking between Mt Vernon Square and U Street to allow for rail, fastener & stud renewal and joint elimination.
