When you have kids, sitting around watching Netflix all weekend won’t cut it. Believe me, I’ve tried. Here are a few free events happening on Saturday in D.C. that are both kid and adult friendly.

  • With temperatures expected to reach nearly 100 degrees, DC Water is offering some reprieve. The agency is hosting its first-ever Family Water Festival complete with face painters, balloon
artists, “and a photo opportunity with Wendy the Water Drop.” It’s taking place at the Bryant Street Pumping Station (301 Bryant Street NW) from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
  • Families can head to the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home (140 Rock Creek Church Road NW) for Family Day at President Lincoln’s Cottage. The event will feature live entertainment and activities inspired by the Lincoln family. It’s taking place from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
  • The DC Public Library is hosting the Sing Talk and Read Family Festival at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. If you don’t think that singing, talking, and reading to your baby will help them in school, experts will try to make you a believer. The event will also feature live entertainment, education resources, door prizes, lunch, face painting, and more. It’s taking place from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
  • An award-winning step troupe and a young girl DJ will be at the same location, and they need an audience. Step Afrika! is wrapping up its Step Xplosion tour with sounds by DJ Beauty & the Beatz and performances by other step teams from the D.C. region. The show is taking place at the Raymond Recreation Center (3725 10th St NW) at 2 p.m.
  • DC Shorts isn’t just for grownups. The film festival’s Family Showcase features six kid-friendly movies in 45 minutes. Screenings are taking place at seven libraries throughout the city at 11a.m.

Bonus: There’s also the 202 Arts & Music Festival, which we mentioned in our weekend roundup.

Also, a reminder that D.C. spray parks will remain open this weekend due to the heat.
