Here are some of the best food and drink events to watch out for in the coming days. We’ve also included some of the high-profile openings around D.C., including at the Smithsonian’s newest museum.
This Week’s Food Events
Mezcal and Mexican food at Compass Rose
Compass Rose (1346 T St. NW) is a city-wide leader in internationally inspired cocktails and food. It’s taking that reputation to another level with its “Sub Rosa” night market series. The next installment happens Thursday, Sept. 22 and 10 p.m. and features Mexican street food and cocktails from Ilegal mezcal. Tickets are $25 and include three types of dishes with drinks available for purchase.
Turkish wine dinner
Wine enthusiasts looking for something new can head to the regal Ottoman Taverna (425 Eye St. NW) on Monday, Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. for a special dinner and Turkish wine tasting. Vinkara Vineyard will provide the wines and chef Ilhan Erkek will prepare a special seven-course diner. The cost is $69 a person, excluding tax and tip. Reservations can be made online or by phone at 202-847-0395.
Dram & Grain goes international
There’s a new fall cocktail menu at Dram & Grain, this time built around internationally-inspired drinks. The “Dram & Global” menu pays tribute to great cocktail scenes around the world, from London to New Orleans to Havana. As such, expect twists on the sazerac, gimlet and drinks with Japanese and other worldly spirits.
An Italian pig roast by the water
Swing on down to Navy Yard for Osteria Morini‘s (301 Water Street, SE) third annual Maialata pig roast. The family-friendly event goes down Saturday, Sept. 18 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. It will have plenty of food, beer from DC Brau and activities like cookie decorating, live music, a local food-celebrity pie toss. Tickets are $65 for food and drinks and $40 for food-only. Kids under 10 are free. They can be purchased online or at the door.
So much beer
Not that you ever had trouble finding beer, but this weekend, you’ll probably find it without even looking. A few of the beer-focused events happening around town include Snallygaster, returning for its fifth year with over 350 beers (The Yards, First and N Streets SE, $35+), the 1st Annual Barley & Music Fest, featuring 16 craft breweries (John Carlyle Square Park, Alexandria, VA, 12-6 p.m., $15+), and Oktoberfest! at the Heurich House Museum, featuring local beers from all nine DC Brewers Guild members. 1-4 p.m. $60 — Melinda Contreras
Openings:
Dining options around Foggy Bottom the Kennedy Center are notoriously lacking, so any new option is worth a look. Enter Aperto (2013 I St. NW), a new Italian restaurant from the chef behind Al Tiramisu in Dupont Circle. Among the options will be a $25 three-course takeout lunch and a menu full of meats, cheeses, pastas (squid ink fettuccini, anyone?), entrees and Italian beverages. Prices for most main dishes are in the mid-$20s and up.
More bagels are coming to town as well. Homegrown Bullfrog Bagels opened its newest location on Capitol Hill (317 7th St. SE) last weekend. And it’s more than just great bagels. The menu also features soup, pasta, dumplings and adult beverages.
We also previewed the eats at Sweet Home Cafe, inside the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. And here’s more pictures and intel on pastrami powerhouse Smoked & Stacked, which opened just last week.
