One of the country’s most successful third wave coffee companies in the country is coming to the District. Blue Bottle Coffee plans to open three shops in D.C. by 2018, the first of which which will be in Georgetown.
“We have reason to believe that a cafe with expertly sourced coffees, roasted and dialed in to our specifications, will be welcome and appreciated,” Blue Bottle founder James Freeman and chief executive Bryan Meehan said in a blog post, citing President Barack Obama’s order of 150 Chemex coffee makers emblazoned with the presidential seal. “Our first cafe there will be located in Georgetown, a quintessential D.C. neighborhood.”
Georgetown Metropolitan first reported the cafe, via an ANC agenda that indicated that the Blue Bottle sign would be coming to 1046 Potomac Street NW (previously home to Down Dog Yoga). The company has not announced the other two locations.
From humble beginnings, Blue Bottle Coffee has raised more than $100 million over several rounds from venture capitalists in recent years. They have expanded to New York, Los Angeles, and Tokyo (where they were greeted with a three-hour long line). In addition to the District, Blue Bottle is planning two cafes in Miami and three in Boston.
This will mark the second Bay-area coffee company to head for the D.C. market in as many years. Philz first opened in Adams Morgan and then The Yards.
