Thanks to Events DC, some of the city’s most iconic buildings will turn into a red light district to celebrate the Nationals starting their playoff run.
Wait … I think you misunderstood. Buildings run by the city’s events and sports authority will literally be bathed in red lights. Events DC is funded through the city’s hotel tax.
The Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Carnegie Library at Mt. Vernon Square, and Gateway DC will all get the scarlet glow in honor of the Nats, who face the L.A. Dodgers tonight in their first postseason game of the year at 5:38 p.m.
“We champion District residents and local businesses to paint D.C. red full of postseason baseball spirit, energy and passion,” said Events DC president Gregory O’Dell, who surely means metaphorically, rather than calling for graffiti. “It has been more than 83 years since Washington, D.C. last hosted a World Series and we believe that the Washington Nationals best baseball is yet to come.”
Nats Manager Dusty Baker, who won his first World Series with the Dodgers 35 years ago, says that the team’s fan base is continuing to develop. “As the young kids and the teenagers become more Nats fans than their parents were, we’ll really see a shift in the fan base,” he told WAMU.
