Earlier this year, the D.C. Department of Transportation reprogrammed nearly 15,000 parking meters so they all cost $2.30 an hour. Now, the department is mixing it up in the Chinatown and Penn Quarter areas by making some spots more or less expensive.
During different times of the day, some spaces will decrease to $2.00 an hour, others will increase to $2.75 an hour, and others will remain the same at $2.30 per hour.
The new rates will change on October 17, as part of a pilot program that bases pricing on the demand for certain spaces (it was announced in 2014 and under study since then). The new rates will affect on-street parking around places between MLK Library and the National Building Museum. Specifically, these are spaces bounded by H Street NW, 3rd Street NW, E Street NW, and 11th Street NW.

“The pilot aims to reduce the time needed to find parking, improve turnover of high-demand parking spaces, provide better parking information to motorists, and reduce congestion,” according to a release from DDOT.
The department is currently working on a website and app so that drivers to more easily find available parking spaces and see what they cost by the hour.
