Nearly a year after launching a shared ride service in the District, Lyft is now experimenting with monthly memberships.

When launching Lyft Line, the company promised rides 60 percent cheaper than a trip in a private car. Now, the company is offering two forms of Lyft Line Passes in November.

One version involves paying $20 upfront, with each shared ride for the month costing $2 apiece. The second option is $29, with all Lyft Line rides included at no additional charge. The deadline for purchase is October 31.

By comparison, Metro’s SelectPass, which also offers unlimited monthly travel, ranges in cost from $81 to $212.40.

In addition to D.C., the passes are also available in Los Angeles, Miami, San Diego, Chicago, and Atlanta. This comes shortly after Lyft rolled out a new luxury option that charges twice as much as a regular ride to “arrive in style.”

Company spokesperson Paige Thelen says that the pass will not affect the bottom line for drivers. “Drivers will be paid based on the time and distance of every ride as they normally are, and passengers can still tip through the app at the end of the ride,” she says.
