Two track inspectors were forced “to jump out of harm’s way” on Thursday when a Metrorail train violated speed restrictions and nearly hit them, according to the Federal Transit Administration.
At the time, the federal workers were assessing track conditions near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Metro station, the FTA said in a release. The speed restrictions were put in place as part of a WMATA procedure that’s supposed to protect the safety of roadway workers. But the train either failed to slow down or stop.
Two Metro operators were aboard the train and have been suspended, a transit authority spokesperson told WAMU, which first reported the incident. The train barreled toward the workers at roughly 50 miles per hour, although the rules call for operators to pass workers at no more than 10 miles per hour, a source “close to the investigation” told WAMU.
Similar incidents have also taken place on six separate occasions in July and August, according FTA records. Last week’s case is now being investigated by the FTA and WMATA.
