The man who oversaw the International Trump Hotel project at the Old Post Office in downtown D.C. has walked out of the door… for good.
David Orowitz is leaving The Trump Organization just over 24 hours after the luxury hotel’s grand opening yesterday, according to Bisnow, which got hold of an email that Orowitz sent to friends and colleagues this afternoon.
Orowitz announced his resignation as the organization’s senior vice president, however, he said he plans to stay in the real estate industry, according to Bisnow. In an email associated with the Jose Andres ordeal, Orowitz showed frustration with Trump’s comments about immigrants. “This is not surprising and would expect that this will not be the last that we hear of it. At least for formal prepared speeches, can someone vet going forward? Hopefully the Latino community does not organize against us more broadly in DC/across Trump properties,” Orowitz wrote.
That premonition came true, as the $200 million hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue NW has been a popular site for protests. Yesterday’s ribbon cutting, for example, was met with chants of “Donald Trump, rich and rude—we don’t like your attitude!”
The project has been otherwise beleaguered by Trump’s candidacy and incendiary comments. Reports indicate that vacancies are high. They’ve already started hiking prices at the cocktail bar. While the hotel was able to scramble to find a replacement for one of the two restaurant spaces, the other was converted into an additional, unnecessary conference room. Earlier this month, someone spray painted the words “Black Lives Matter” and “No Justice, No Peace” on the granite walls in front of the hotel’s entrance on 12th Street. Advocates have filed a lawsuit to determine public access to the building’s exterior.
“I’ve been pretty invested in getting it done right. We’ve done that now,” Orowiz told Bisnow about his decision to step down after starting the project six years ago. ‘”It seemed like the logical time” to go.
