MONDAY, OCTOBER 31
PET COSTUMES: Your pets want to be someone/something else for a day too! Get your pets in on the Halloween fun with the chance to win prizes during Dupont Circle’s Pet Costume Contest (Dog Park at 17th and S Street, NW, 6 p.m.), and/or Satellite Room’s Howl-O-Ween (8 p.m.). Costume categories in Dupont Circle include best costume, fashion pioneer, and pet-owner look alike, and prizes at the Satellite Room include cash and gift packages from Doozy Dog. Petless spectators also welcome. FREE
COVER BANDS: The last night of Once Upon a Zombie at the Passenger features Misfits and REM cover bands. Mythical costumes encouraged. (8 p.m.-2 a.m. FREE)
DANCE PARTY: MIXTAPE, the monthly alternative dance party featuring a mix of electro, indie-pop, alt-dance, house, and nu-disco, is back with their annual Halloween party. Best costume wins $500 plus free entry to MIXTAPE dance parties for one year. (The Howard Theatre, 8 p.m. $10)

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1
DIA DE LOS MUERTOS: Halloween may be over, but you can still honor the dead according to Mexican traditions at one of several Día de los Muertos celebrations. Espita Mezcaleria’s Meurte y Misterio (5 p.m.) features complimentary mezcal tastings with your dinner, special cocktails and dishes, and face painting at the bar. Meanwhile, the National Portrait Gallery‘s celebration (5-7:30 p.m.) will feature music, dancing, and crafts.
TASTE OF JAPAN: Join Rudy Maxa, host of the travel series Rudy Maxa’s World, and restaurateur Daisuke Utagawa (Daikaya, Bantam King, Haikan, Sushiko) in a discussion about “the commitment, pride, and precision that creates Japanese cuisine.” The program will also feature a screening of the Tokyo episode of the series, featuring Maxa and Utagawa visiting a vinegar factory, wasabi farm, and more. A sushi tasting will follow the screening. (S. Dillon Ripley Center, 6:45-8:45 p.m., $30-45)
HIP-HOP FESTIVAL: The World Beats & Life Hip-Hop Festival—featuring performances, workshops, battles and presentations—kicks off with 12 poets facing off in the DC Youth Poet Laureate Finals. (Busboys & Poets-5th and K St, 6-8 p.m. $10)

DANCE: Choose to watch professionals dance, or bring out your inner dancer. Motion X Dance DC will perform excerpts from Altered Archives and It’s On Her, along with the re-work of the multimedia work, Concrete Devotion (Kennedy Center, 6 p.m. FREE) while Nicole Renard leads a Dancing Mindfulness class, a judgement free zone of free movement. THEATRE: Pay-what-you-can to see the Mosaic Theatre Company of DC’s production of Milk Like Sugar and follow Annie as she tries to make good on a life altering pact. (Atlas Performing Arts Center, 8 p.m. PWYC)

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 4
BEER AND CHEESE: Prep for holiday hosting duties in this class led by fromager and beer aficionado Melissa Provinsal. You’ll be guided through a tasting of four winter cheese & craft beer pairings to please all palates. (Union Market, 7-8 p.m., $49)
DEATH: The right to die and brain death will be discussed at separate events Thursday evening. First, Deborah Ziegler will discuss her book Wild and Precious Life, a chronicle of Brittany Maynard’s decision to end her own life before brain cancer could rob her of of her ability to think, speak, hear, and see. (S. Dillon Ripley Center. 6:45-8:15 p.m., $20-30). Second, Professor Niel Rosen will lead a Knowledge Commons DC class on Aristotle and Brain Death , discussing how the dead differ from the living, and whether brain death and death refer to the same biological phenomenon. FILM FESTIVAL: The 2016 Film|Neu festival, a showcase of films from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, kicks off with the comedy Me and Kaminski (Ich und Kaminski) the tale of an unsuccessful young journalist hoping for the subject of his latest article to die soon so that he can cash in on the article and become famous. This opening night screening includes beer, wine, and German snacks following the screening. (E-Street Cinema, 7 p.m., $27)
