FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4
DANCE PERFORMANCE: Experience the intertwining of “dance, athletics, boxing, rodeo, circus, and stunt work,” as STREB EXTREME ACTION performs the first of three shows Friday evening (the other two are on Saturday). (The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, 8 p.m. $29-79)
ART AND BEER: Enjoy six pairings (technically triplings…) of art, beer, and appetizers at The Art League’s third annual Art on Tap. Participating breweries and restaurants include Port City Brewing, Starr Hill Brewery, and Forge Brew Works, and Pizzeria Paradiso, Columbia Firehouse, and Virtue Feed & Grain. FLAMENCO: The 12th Annual Flamenco Festival kicks off with the world premiere of Flamenco, an autobiographical piece following Edwin Aparicio “from his childhood in war-torn El Salvador, to his migration to the U.S., to his discovery of dance.” (GALA Hispanic Theatre, 8 p.m. $25-40)
COMEDY: Capital Laughs’ monthly “comedy extravaganza” is back this weekend. Friday’s show will include sets by comic: Sean Gabbert (Sirius XM), Franqi French (Comedy Store), Chelsea Shorte (DC Improv), plus a few other guest spots. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5
SIDESHOW: Prepare to be amazed (or freaked out…). Side Yards at Yards Park returns to showcase the talents of contortionists, escape artists, snake handlers, fire breathers, sword swallowers, and more. There will also be “normal” things like a photo booth, screening printing, sketch artist, beer garden, and more. (Yards Park, 6-10 p.m. FREE)
TRABANTS: The Tenth Annual Parade of Trabants will feature the chance to win a ride in a Trabant, as well as the chance to stuff yourself in one with as many people as possible. If you’re claustrophobic, you’re also welcome to admire them from the outside. (International Spy Museum, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. FREE)
FULL-BODY WORKOUT: Have you ever had the urge to workout to Kanye at 2 in the morning? [solidcore] is here to satisfy that urge with 24 back-to-back classes of “full body workouts that use slow and controlled movements to work your muscles to failure -.” The 24 hours of full-body workouts honoring solidcore’s third anniversary will feature a different theme every hour, and proceeds will benefit Partnership for a Healthier America. VIDEO GAME MUSIC: The Legend of Zelda concert is almost sold-out, but lucky for you, there’s another way for you to hear video game music performed by a live orchestra. The Washington Metropolitan Gamer Symphony Orchestra kicks off its fall season with a small ensemble showcase featuring vocal and instrumental duets, quartets and small chamber groups performing music from Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy IX, and more. BEER: Do you prefer all-inclusive or pay-as-you-go beer tastings? Festivals in both formats are being held on Saturday. While the DC Beer Fest will offer three hours of unlimited tasting from over 100 breweries (Nationals Park, 12-3 p.m. or 5-8 p.m., $45), Novemberfest will offer over 70 beers and ciders from 70 Virginia producers. 6 oz pours will be approximately $2-4 each, and 14 oz pours will be approximately $5-8 each. TWEED RIDE: Grab your bowties and tweed hats, shorts, blazers, dresses, etc. The annual DC Tweed Ride is back. Hosted by Dandies & Quaintrelles, the organization that hosts vintage-inspired events built on “ideals of refined style and purposeful living,” the event will feature a casual cruise around D.C (1-4 p.m.) with plenty of photo breaks (don’t Instagram and drive, people). The ride will be followed by an after-party (5:30-9 p.m.) at Roofer’s Union featuring performances y Dandy Wellington and His Band plus the Fidgety Feet Dancers. Riding is FREE (RSVP in advance for the secret starting location). After party-tickets range from $20-42.50. (***The buffet meal option must be purchased by Thursday evening***)
BREAKDANCE BATTLE: The inaugural Words Beats & Life Festival closes out with 7 hours of breakdance competition. The 3 vs. 3 competition with a $10,000 prize will consist of a prelim round featuring walk up registrants battling to snag 8 of 16 slots. The other 8 slots will be pre-filled by specially invited b-boy crews from around the world. (The John F. Kennedy Center, Grand Foyer, 12-7 p.m. FREE)
BEER TOUR: Join Garrett Peck, author of Alexandria’s Historic Breweries, and Cat Portner, co-founder of the soon to open Portner Brewhouse, a brewery restaurant and Craft Beer Test Kitchen, for the #ALXBREWTOUR . Explore the foundations of local brewing in Alexandria and sample three beer varieties crafted by homebrewer Matthew Becker. (Old Presbyterian Meeting House, 2-4:30 p.m., $25)
