Estately is allegedly a real estate research firm, but it seems to me like it spends most of its time looking at what people in each state are asking Google—often with hilarious findings. (Floridians, for instance, have questions like “Why does everyone hate Florida?” and “When is Opposite Day?”)
And this important work continues on Election Day, when the firm looked into which election-related queries each state (plus D.C.!) Googled more than the others.
D.C. pretty much performs to stereotype, asking the search engine about the Hatch Act, which limits federal government employees (with some exceptions, like the president and VP) from directly campaigning or swaying elections. It became a topic of interest after accusations that FBI head James Comey violated it with his letter to Congress about Hillary Clinton’s emails. Other searches included ABC Tracking Poll, Donna Brazile (the interim Democratic National Committee Chair), and bad hombre shirts. (Snooze, but at least we’re not like New Yorkers, searching for Lena Dunham’s rap.)
Maryland also cares about the Hatch Act, along with Michelle Obama Versace, KKK newspaper, Donna Brazile Wikileaks, and election anxiety.
Rather than election anxiety, folks in the commonwealth are searching for ‘election party.’ That’s the spirit, Virginia! They’re also looking into their senator and former governor, Tim Kaine—searching his name alongside “mistress” and “young,” Gary Johnson stunt, and Clinton economic plan.
