In addition to patronizing a host of new restaurants and shops at the Southwest site, District residents will soon be able to catch a water taxi at The Wharf, which is currently undergoing a major transformation. Officials announced yesterday details about expanding the region’s water taxi fleet, as part of their plans for the development.
The system will ferry people daily along the Potomac River to and from The Wharf’s Transit Pier, stopping in Georgetown and near Nationals Park in D.C., as well as the National Harbor in Maryland and Old Town Alexandria. And there’s a chance for more stops “in the very near future.” according to a release.
The new vessels will carry up to 100 people, in addition to bikes and luggage. They will also be equipped with wi-fi and charging ports. And the boats’ design allows for a more efficient ride—20 minutes between The Wharf and Old Town.
The busiest season is expected between Memorial Day and Labor Day, which will offer three routes with pickups at least 10 times a day. During the off-seasons—March to May and September to December— there will be a minimum of four trips per day. And the boats won’t run at all in January and February.
The Wharf is teaming up on the project with Entertainment Cruises, which already provides limited water taxi service to Mount Vernon, Alexandria, National Harbor, and Georgetown through its Potomac Riverboat Company. The trips range from $8 to $14 each way.
“Our newly expanded partnership with the Wharf offers a refreshing way to experience our beautiful city, as well as a comfortable and convenient way to access Alexandria, National Harbor and Georgetown,” said Kenneth Svendsen, CEO of Entertainment Cruises. The taxi is also environmentally friendly and should help reduce car traffic, according to the release.
It’s slated to open October 2017.
