The first week of December features a full agenda of food and drink events, from marking the end of prohibition to pizza-making classes and whiskey deals. Here are the events to plan for in the coming days.
This week’s food events:
Pizza for kids
Pizzeria Vetri (2221 14th St. NW) is hosting a parent and child pizza making class this Sunday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. Tickets can be booked online and are $50 per adult and child, with additional participants for $25 each. It’s all the fun of cooking with your kids without the stress of clean up.
Whiskey deals in Petworth
Petworth Citizen (829 Upshur St. NW) has rolled out a new whiskey happy hour on Wednesdays. Each whiskey behind the bar will be half-off, and there will be special guests as well. Next week will feature Alex Bookless from Catoctin Creek distillery.
Maryland beer and Spanish tapas
The Bethesda location of José Andrés’ Jaleo is hosting a special beer dinner with Maryland’s Jailbreak brewery on December 5 at 7 p.m. Tickets for the five-course dinner cost $65 and include beer and tapas pairings like fried eggplant with honey and Feed the Monkey wheat beer and braised short ribs with Infinite amber ale.
Fried chicken and bubbly
Chicken and champagne might not seem like a natural pairing, but Macon Bistro & Larder (5520 Connecticut Ave. NW) is making a go of the match this December. Swing by the Southern-inspired dining room on Mondays this month from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. for $3 drumsticks, $4 sides like grits, mac and cheese, and collard greens and $12 pours of Champagne.
Mmm, cheese
Cold weather is back, so that means the return of fondue at Garrison (524 8th St. NE). The special menu will pop up daily at the bar and patio for $18 a person. Each order comes with bread cubes and seasonal ingredients can be added for a fee of $4 to $10. Think apples, rutabagas, turnips, steak tips, and potatoes.
Openings
The much-anticipated MGM casino at National Harbor is finally slated to open on December 8. The development includes a number of restaurants, including projects from José Andrés, Marcus Samuelsson, and the Voltaggio brothers. There’ll also be the cherry blossom-themed Blossom lounge and the Felt bar, modeled after an archival library with a modern flare.
Changes are taking place in Petworth, as Twisted Horn (819 Upshur St. NW) is getting new branding as Hank’s Cocktail Bar. Expect a similar vibe with a slightly adjusted drink and food menu at the neighborhood watering hole.
Plan ahead
Celebrate the end of prohibition at the annual Repeal Day Ball, hosted by the D.C. Craft Bartender’s Guild. It all goes down Friday, Dec. 9 at 8 p.m. Tickets for the black-tie party begin at $80 with VIP tickets going for $120 a piece. Bartenders from D.C. and around the country will be mixing drinks, and there will be plenty of food and jazz music too.
