Following the news that astronaut and senator John Glenn died yesterday, the National Portrait Gallery is hanging up a portrait of him.

The watercolor and graphite portrait was made from life by artist Henry C. Caselli Jr. in 1998, depicting Glenn shortly before the launch of the Discovery space shuttle. That nine-day mission made Glenn the oldest person to reach space at age 77. That wasn’t his only record in the space program. He was also the first American to orbit the planet.

The portrait went on view at 11:30 a.m. today on the first floor, in the museum’s In Memoriam area.

Caselli was commissioned by NASA “to record for posterity the flight preparations of his most celebrated astronaut subject,” according to the artist’s website.
