Brenda Bullock can’t have a pet for the next five years as part of her sentence after she was convicted of animal cruelty charges today.
When three pit bull-type puppies were removed from her care, they were suffering from chronic medical conditions, and one of them was extremely emaciated and weak with low blood sugar, body temperature, and protein, as well as a massive skin infection.
Judge Todd Edelman convicted Bullock, of Northeast, of three counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals in D.C. Superior Court. Edelman sentenced her to serve three ninety-day-terms in jail, but suspended that ruling contingent upon her successfully completing five years of probation.
“We are pleased that justice carried the day in this case, and a message clearly sent, that cruelty and neglect will not be tolerated,” said Lisa LaFontaine, President and CEO of Humane Rescue Alliance in a release.
In addition to not being able to own animals during her probation period, Bullock will have to participate in a class that teaches participants how to be responsible pet owners.
The puppies—Chase, Haagen Dazs, and Klondike—were taken from Bullock in April. Veterinarians from the Dogs and Cats Veterinary Referral & Emergency Hospital in Bowie suspect that their conditions were from months of neglect “to reach the level of severity.”
All three puppies have since received treatment and been adopted.
