Bloomingdale bakery Grassroots Gourmet announced that it will be shuttering its doors after Christmas Eve.

Identical Facebook and Instagram posts from the bakery expressed sadness and gratitude to customers, neighboring businesses, baking peers, and staff.

“Baking cakes for you and your families from birthdays to weddings to baby showers and more, has been a true privilege. We want to thank you for allowing us to be a part of the community and will miss you all very much! We’ll be open through December 24th and look forward to baking for you one last time, so stop in for a sweet treat before the holidays.”

Grassroots Gourmet opened its brick-and-mortar location on Rhode Island Ave. a little more than four years ago in November 2012. Co-owners Sara Fatell and Jamilyah Smith-Kanze had previously operated a delivery service for baked goods.

In an interview with the Blade shortly after they opened the store, the owners explained they launched the Bloomingdale location because “baking leads to sharing, it is comforting, delicious and helps build community by fostering communication.”

Grassroots’ raspberry thumbprint cookie made it to our list of the best cookies in D.C. this summer.

We’ve reached out to the Grassroots Gourmet owners for comment, and will update when we hear back.

Neighboring restaurant Rustik Tavern closed at the end of November after six years in business.
