When Republicans have control over all three branches of government in January, many conservative lawmakers and advocates see an opportunity to fulfill a long-awaited dream—defunding Planned Parenthood.

Federal and D.C. government funds already can’t be used to pay for abortions. Most federal funding for the organization comes from Medicaid because low-income women get all kinds of health services at Planned Parenthood clinics—cancer screenings, family planning, STI testing and treatment, and more.

Not to worry, though, women! There are all kinds of non-Planned Parenthood clinics, says the website GetYourCare.org, which calls itself “a resource brought to you by the pro-women & pro-life movements of America. Our goal is to give women everywhere in America access to information about the thousands and thousands of quality health care options women have.” It’s funded through some major anti-choice groups like the March for Life and the Alliance Defending Freedom.

When you enter your location into the site, it provides suggestions for places to seek alternative healthcare.

But an investigation from Rewire found that many of these other options simply didn’t check out.

The most bizarre? Washington D.C.’s Correctional Treatment Facility, the specialized medium-security institution located near D.C. Jail.

Here’s what happened when a Rewire reporter called CTF to schedule a breast exam:

“This is a jail,” the receptionist said. The reporter asked whether people from the community could nonetheless make appointments at the facility for a breast exam, a Pap smear, or a test for sexually transmitted infections. “Ma’am, this is a jail,” she said again, before suggesting that the reporter contact doctors’ offices nearby.

Not all of the listed alternatives are as shockingly off-base. In the District, some of the listed alternatives do provide healthcare services, like Community of Hope.

But many of them are ill-equipped to offer healthcare, particularly to substitute for Planned Parenthood. In addition to the D.C. correctional facility, Rewire found the more than 10,000 alternative options listed on the website nationwide include “hundreds of elementary, middle, and high schools; clinics that provide care for homeless people; nursing homes; pediatrics centers” and more.
