A baggage handler was locked inside the cargo area of a plane that flew from Charlotte-Douglas International Airport to Washington Dulles International Airport on Sunday afternoon.
The incident involved United Express flight 6060, which was operated by Mesa Airlines, according to Erin Benson, a spokesperson for United Airlines. Once the plane arrived safely at the gate, the vendor employee was found in the cargo area. The cargo hold was temperature controlled and pressurized and the employee was safe and unharmed.
The man has been identified as 45-year-old Reginald Gaskin, according to The Washington Post. While Gaskin declined to say how he wound up locked inside the plane, he told The Post: “I thank God. He was with me.”
The plane took off just before 3 p.m. on Sunday, rose to 27,000 feet, and arrived at Dulles airport 90 minutes later, The Post reported. At some point, workers in Charlotte realized that Gaskin may have been locked inside and contacted the Federal Aviation Administration.
United Airlines is still investigating the case.
