Following a light dusting last week, D.C. is expected to get its first measurable amount of snow this evening.
While it still may not amount to much, the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory and snow plows will hit the streets this afternoon.
There’s a 40 percent chance that we’ll see snow after 1 p.m., according to NWS. And there’s an 80 percent chance that snow will fall tonight and into tomorrow morning before 4 a.m., accumulating about one to two inches.
Yesterday, D.C.’s snow team pre-treated major streets and highways with its “hot mix” of brine and beet juice, which “helps retard freezing,” according to a release from Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office.
And the city is deploying more than 220 snow plows today that will be on their posts by 3 p.m.
D.C. property owners are advised to spread rock salt, deicer, or non-clumping kitty litter on their sidewalks. And during every snow event, homeowners (except those age 65 or older and/or living with a disability) are required to remove snow from their sidewalks within the first eight hours of daylight after snowfall.
